Investigation works on the Maribyrnong River in Footscray will start this week to further inform the design of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
A 13 metre mobile barge and drilling rig will be launched from the river bank near Shepherd Bridge, and move along the river to collect soil samples from the river bed.
The samples will provide detailed information about the river’s geological features that will further develop the engineering design for the project’s Maribyrnong River crossing and help plan for construction in 2018.
The West Gate Tunnel Project includes a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River which connects the tunnel under Yarraville to an elevated road along Footscray Road and connections into the Port of Melbourne, providing quicker and safer journeys.
The barge will start work this week and is expected to be operational until the end of 2017.
As there may be shipwrecks in the Maribyrnong River, we have done specialist sonar mapping to look for objects along the riverbed.
The sonar mapping will also assist with the operation of the barge and help minimise impacts on the Maribyrnong River.
