The West Gate Tunnel will take thousands of trucks off residential streets in the inner west streets helping to improve safety, local air quality and noise.

How the project will help

A tunnel from the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne and CityLink will give trucks a more reliable and direct connection, and create a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

Trucks carrying dangerous goods or overheight trucks that are banned from tunnels, will also be able to avoid residential streets by using new ramps from the West Gate Freeway to connect to the port and fuel depots on Hyde Street.

Truck bans for the inner west

With a new alternative for trucks, the Victorian Government will introduce 24 hour truck bans when the project opens to ensure that trucks use the freeway and to prevent rat runs through local streets.

Exemptions will apply to trucks with local origins and destinations. This ensures that local businesses can continue to receive and supply goods.

  • Francis Street – The Francis Street ban will apply between Roberts Street and Hyde Street.
  • Somerville Road – The Somerville Road ban will apply between Geelong Road and Whitehall Street.
  • Buckley Street – The full length of Buckley Street and part of Napier Street will be covered by the ban, from Geelong Road to Whitehall Street.
  • Moore Street – The full length of Moore Street will be covered by the ban, from Ballarat Road to Hopkins Street.
  • Blackshaws Road – The full length of Blackshaws Road will be covered by the ban, from Melbourne Road to Grieve Parade.
  • Hudsons Road – The Hudsons Road ban will apply between Melbourne Road and Booker Street.
