The West Gate Tunnel Project’s community Info Centre officially opened on Saturday 22 September, with a free BBQ for the local community.
Over 500 visitors attended, with many enjoying a drive of the project design of the widened West Gate Freeway, new tunnel, and elevated freeway on the touch screen model. Others took a virtual reality ride along the 2.5 kilometre elevated veloway to be built above Footscray Road.
The free balloons, face painting and cupcakes were a huge hit, as was the scale model of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will build the twin tunnels under Yarraville.
The 50:1 scale model TBM took over 700 hours to create. It is made of timber and 3D printed parts that replicate the detailed internal mechanisms of the real TBMs to give an inside look at the specialised machine that will build the tunnels.
Community members can drop into the Info Centre at any time Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Our friendly team members are on hand to answer questions and show people around.
The Info Centre is located on the corner Whitehall Street & Sommerville Road, Yarraville. If driving or walking to the Information Centre, you can access the visitor car park and a pedestrian entrance from Somerville Road.
Travelling by public transport? You can catch bus route 409 to the closest bus stop, Yarraville Gardens/Hyde Street. From here, it’s a five-minute walk along Somerville Road to our Information Centre.
Alternatively, Yarraville and Seddon train stations are both located 1km away, about a 15-minute walk to the Information Centre.
The West Gate Tunnel Project will end Melbourne’s reliance on the West Gate Bridge by building twin tunnels under Yarraville, a new crossing of the Maribyrnong River, and an elevated road above Footscray Road creating new connections to the city.
