West Gate Kids is the school engagement program of the West Gate Tunnel Project targeting schools in Melbourne’s west. The program has been created for primary and secondary students from 10 to 14 years of age.
It links directly to the school curriculum and promotes the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) subjects. West Gate Kids promotes real-world learning, using challenges from the project as a basis for its activities. It supports students from diverse backgrounds to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of future career opportunities related to transport and infrastructure.
About the sessions: Engineering Our City
We have partnered with local provider, SciencePlay Kids to deliver creative and engaging sessions that bring science to life. Students from schools in the west of Melbourne are immersed in the world of science and do a variety of hands-on experiments related to how cities work, electricity circuits, bridges, tunnels and more.
The session explores the design, engineering and development of a city.
Content focuses on civil engineering and transport infrastructure including tunnels, bridges, roads and bike paths.
'Engineering Our City' has curriculum links in:
- design and technologies
- critical and creative thinking.
West Gate Tunnel Information Centre
Our information centre in Yarraville is a great place to learn about one of Victoria’s largest road projects. We have developed a range of activities suited to young people – from augmented reality views of the project to a virtual cycle ride and an explorer activity sheet which can guide students around the centre. Schools are always welcome to come and visit.
We’d love to tell you more about our program – feel free to get in touch.
